“Discover Your Second Life”
The Second Life Discovery Day 2007
Introduction
The hype surrounding the multi-user virtual environment Second Life has mostly focussed on its negative aspects, which has limited the support for individuals and groups interested in exploring the research, education and business potentials of this exciting new space.
There is a vibrant and innovative group of Australian researchers and educators conducting activities in Second Life. This event will
be an opportunity to showcase:
-
potentials for education and business
-
current research
The Second Life Discovery Day aims to present a balanced overview of the environment, targeted at an audience who has little or no
experience of Second Life.
Background
The idea of organising a Second Life Discovery Day was originally mooted by Dr. Suku Sinnappan from Swinburne University of Technology in July 2007. An organising committee was formed in August and preparations for the inaugural event commenced in September. It was decided that the event would be developed jointly by Monash University and Swinburne University of Technology.
The primary organisers of the event are:
-
Dr. Suku Sinnappan – Swinburne University of Technology
-
Dr. Melissa De Zwart – Monash University
-
Ms. Debra McCormick – Monash University
Event Description
In line with our intention to provide an overview of the environment to people with little or no practical experience of Second Life, the
content of the presentations will be accessible to an audience with varying interests and experience. The content will include presentations ranging from background information about Linden Lab and the Second Life organisation, through to past, present and future educational and business activities being conducted in the environment. It is our intention that the flow and content of
presentations will build a rounded view of Second Life.
The event will take place on Saturday 17 November from 9am – 5pm AEST. The presentations will be conducted live from Monash University Caulfield Campus and Second Life. The presenters have been chosen as experts in their field.
‘Discover Your Second Life’ will be a free event however we will ask participants to register.
Audience
Due to space (real world) and technical (Second Life) limitations the primary attendees will be invited representatives (TBA) from:
